How no-dig sewer repair works
The no-dig sewer repair is also known as trenchless sewer repair. It is a method that has been around for more than a decade. Sadly, there are still a lot of property owners who do not know about it. So at Feltner’s Sewer & Drain Services, it is our desire to educate our customers about the advantages of using the no-dig sewer repair method compared to the traditional trench method.

There are two ways a no-dig sewer repair is done. First is pipe lining and second is pipe bursting. These are popular methods among plumbers who use the new trenchless technology, including our company.

The pipe lining method, as its name implies, is done by lining the walls of the old pipe with epoxy resin, therefore creating a new pipe within the old pipe. The lining does not have to be on the entire pipe, though. It can be in certain parts of the pipe – especially the damaged portions or parts that have holes and gaps due to corrosion.

Before a sewer repair is done using the pipe lining method, an initial inspection has to take place first to determine the extent of the damage on the sewer lines and to know which part of the pipe needs repairing. The pipe has to also be cleaned to free it from obstructions so that when the sewer repair liner is placed in, it forms beautifully on the walls of the old pipe.

The pipe bursting method is as its name also implies. The old pipe is burst, especially when there is severe damage that cannot be remedied by simple repair.

To burst the pipe, a rod or cable is inserted into the lines. This rod has a head shaped like an arrow that serves as a bursting tool. It breaks the old pipe as it goes through underground. With a camera attached to it, our operator can see what is going on in the pipe and can control where the rod should go. The rod can bend on pipe joints so it makes it easier for the job to get done.

To accomplish this pipe bursting work, we dig a small opening called an entrance or access point where we insert the rod or cable. Then we dig another small opening at the end of the pipe line called an exit. This is where the bursting rod comes out and a new pipe, usually made of PVC material, is pulled in place of the old pipe.
